Creative Team: Paul Levitz (Plot/Script), Keith Giffen (Plot/Pencils), Kurt Schaffenberger (Inks).
π Synopsis
For the past several issues, the Legion has suspected that the quiet, withdrawn Shrinking Violet was an imposter, and this issue reveals the truth:
-
The Sting Operation: The Legion executes a sting on Violet’s home planet of Imsk. They expose the “Violet” with Cancelite, a chemical created by Supergirl that negates shapeshifting.
-
Yera Revealed: The imposter is revealed to be Yera, an actress from the planet Durlan (Chameleon Boy’s homeworld). Yera was hired by Imskian separatists, including former villain Micro Lad, who wanted an operative inside the Legion.
-
The Real Violet: The Legion finds the real Shrinking Violet (Salu Digby), who has been held captive by Micro Lad for six months in a sensory deprivation tank. The depiction of her, frail and mentally scarred, was intentionally harrowing and groundbreaking for a mainstream comic at the time.
-
Colossal Boy’s Heartbreak: The biggest emotional moment is the revelation to Colossal Boy (Gim Allon). He had fallen in love with and planned to marry the “Violet” of the past few months. He learns his crush was a lie and his love was for an imposterβthough the epilogue reveals that Yera had genuinely fallen in love with him, setting up a complex, enduring romance.
-
Long-Term Impact: This storyline resulted in the real Shrinking Violet developing severe PTSD, completely changing her personality from timid to hardened and cynical, and it cemented Yera as a beloved character who would go on to marry Colossal Boy and join the Legion later as Yera Allon.
