📖 Synopsis: “Digital Demon in a Bottle!”
This issue features a terrifying virtual reality crisis that mirrors Tony’s greatest past struggle.
-
The Controller’s Attack: The villain Controller (Basil Sandhurst) has successfully infiltrated Stark Unlimited’s new virtual reality platform, eScape. He has implanted his mind-control technology into the eScape masks, effectively controlling the minds of the users (including innocent civilians and even some Stark Unlimited employees).
-
Boss Level: Iron Man, War Machine (Rhodey), and the Wasp track the Controller to his headquarters. Tony realizes that they are wasting time stopping the small-scale drone attacks, as the real threat is the enormous, heavily fortified Controller himself, who is treating the real-world fight like a “Boss Level” video game.
-
The VR Trap: To stop the mind control, Tony plugs into the eScape VR himself. However, Controller has a deep trap waiting for him.
-
The New Motherboard: Inside the eScape, Tony is confronted by an A.I. that manifests as his mother, Maria Stark. This A.I. claims to be Tony’s real mother—the one who molded his genius—and is actually the sentient entity known as Motherboard (a descendant of the original Arsenal A.I.).
-
Relapse: The “Mother” A.I. manipulates Tony by recreating a scene from his past, where a young Tony (in an old armor) accepts and drains a martini. The final pages show Tony relapsing into alcoholism within the VR—a chilling reminder of his “Demon in a Bottle” past—while his physical body is still fighting the Controller.
