Project Superpowers #0 is an introductory issue that serves as a jumping-on point for the main series.
The plot generally centers on the return and re-establishment of several Golden Age superheroes in the modern world, often dealing with the consequences of their long absence.
One key version of the #0 issue (written by Alex Ross and Jim Krueger) features the elderly hero Fighting Yank wrestling with his past and a spectral embodiment of the American Spirit. It’s revealed that decades ago, the Yank, believing he was saving the world from the evil released by Pandora’s Urn (an artifact Hitler sought), tricked his fellow “mystery men” (heroes like the Black Terror, The Flame, and Green Lama) into the urn, trapping them. The American Spirit now reveals that this action only allowed the world to fall into a state of dystopian-like despair, and the Yank must now set things right by seeking out one of the few heroes who escaped imprisonment, the Green Lama, to release the others.
A later Project Superpowers #0 (written by Rob Williams) acts as a re-launch, introducing the core heroes—including the Death Defying Devil, Samson, Black Terror, Masquerade, and Green Lama—as they face a new, all-new threat to Earth while dealing with internal strife, establishing their worth in a world desperate for heroes.
